Dallas is the third-largest city in Texas by population, following Houston and San Antonio. With more than 1.3 million residents, Dallas is also one of the most populous cities in the United States. Its population has grown significantly over the past several decades, establishing it as one of the state's major urban centers.
Dallas Has Over 1.3 Million Residents
According to U.S. Census Bureau estimates, Dallas had approximately 1.33 million residents in 2025, making it the third-most populous city in Texas.
The city recorded 1,197,816 residents in the 2010 Census and 1,304,379 residents in the 2020 Census. This represented an increase of more than 100,000 people over the decade.
Dallas's population growth has been influenced by migration, residential development, and changes in the city's demographic composition.
Dallas Is the Ninth-Largest City in the United States
Dallas ranks ninth among U.S. cities by population, according to the Census Bureau's July 2025 estimates.
Its population is smaller than Houston and San Antonio but larger than those of other major Texas cities, including Fort Worth and Austin.
Dallas's Population Has Grown Since 2020
Dallas had an estimated 1,329,491 residents in July 2025, representing an increase of approximately 25,000 people compared with the 2020 Census.
Although its population has fluctuated slightly in recent years, Dallas remains an important population center in North Texas.
The city is also part of the much larger Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area, which has more than eight million residents. The metropolitan population includes neighboring cities and suburbs, making it considerably larger than Dallas's population within city limits.
