Fort Worth is the fourth-largest city in Texas by population, following Houston, San Antonio, and Dallas. With more than one million residents, Fort Worth has experienced substantial population growth over the past several decades, becoming one of the fastest-growing major cities in the United States.
Fort Worth Has More Than 1 Million Residents
According to U.S. Census Bureau estimates, Fort Worth had approximately 1,028,117 residents as of July 2025, officially exceeding the one-million population milestone.
The city had 741,206 residents in 2010 and 918,915 in 2020. This represents an increase of nearly 287,000 people over 15 years.
Fort Worth's population growth has been influenced by migration, new residential developments, and the continued expansion of communities throughout North Texas.
Fort Worth Is the 10th-Largest City in the United States
Fort Worth ranks 10th among American cities by population, according to the U.S. Census Bureau's 2025 estimates.
Within Texas, it ranks fourth, ahead of Austin, which also surpassed one million residents.
Fort Worth's population growth has helped strengthen its position as one of the country's largest urban centers.
Fort Worth Is One of America's Fastest-Growing Major Cities
Between July 2024 and July 2025, Fort Worth gained approximately 19,512 residents, an increase of about 2%.
This was the second-largest numerical population increase among American cities with at least 20,000 residents during that period.
Since the 2020 Census, Fort Worth's population has grown by approximately 11.9%, making it the fastest-growing city among the nation's 30 most populous cities over that period.
Fort Worth's Population Continues to Expand
Fort Worth's population growth reflects the broader expansion of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area, one of the largest metropolitan regions in the United States.
The city's growing population has increased demand for housing, transportation, schools, public services, and other infrastructure.
With more than one million residents, Fort Worth has reached an important demographic milestone and remains one of Texas's major population centers.
