Austin, the capital of Texas, has officially surpassed one million residents, becoming the fifth-largest city in the state. Its population growth over the past several decades has transformed it into one of the most populous cities in the United States.
Austin Has More Than 1 Million Residents
According to the U.S. Census Bureau's July 2025 population estimates, Austin had 1,002,632 residents, officially surpassing the one-million mark for the first time.
The city had approximately 790,390 residents in 2010 and 961,855 in 2020. This steady increase reflects the significant population growth Austin has experienced over the past 15 years.
Austin Is the Fifth-Largest City in Texas
Austin ranks fifth among Texas cities by population, following Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, and Fort Worth.
In 2025, Austin also became the 12th-largest city in the United States, joining a group of only 12 American cities with populations exceeding one million residents.
Austin's Population Continues to Grow
Between July 2024 and July 2025, Austin gained approximately 4,025 residents, representing an increase of about 0.4%.
Although its population growth has slowed compared with earlier decades, Austin continues to attract new residents and expand its urban communities.
Surpassing one million residents represents an important milestone in the city's development and highlights its position as one of Texas's major population centers.
