History

The town of Lakeway was established by a Houston oilman and rancher named Jack Josey, and he established the town on his 2,700-acre ranch. During early 1962. Houston businessmen from the Gulfmont Hotel Company, namely, John H. Crooker, G. Flint Sawtelle, and Lee Blocker. They managed to obtain a sixty-day opportunity to acquire the land, as well as plan a hotel and resort community. The name Lakeway was like a nod to Gulfmont’s Fairway Motor Hotel, located n McAllen, Texas because it overlooked the fairway of a golf course. In 1962, the hotel’s construction and a grand opening were held on July 12 the following year. During this time, the Lakeway Land Company was established, and Flint Sawtelle was named the president of its development for real estate. That is why the town attracted several newcomers to come and settle. In 1974, most of Lakeway’s non-resident and property owners, with the consent of the city of Austin, voted to incorporate the town, resulting in the 1,200-acre village of Lakeway.
