Welcome to Floydada, Texas—a small town with a rich history, located in the rolling plains of Floyd County. Known for its agricultural roots, welcoming community, and deep connections to Texas tradition.
The story begins in 1890 when the town was originally called Floyd City. It was established on 640 acres of land donated by James B. and Caroline Price, who were originally from Jefferson City, Missouri.
As the town grew, it quickly became a hub for local commerce and agriculture. In a pivotal moment, Floydada won an election against the nearby town of Della Plain to become the county seat.
Shortly after, the name was changed to Floydada when the post office opened. There are several theories about the origin of the name—some say it was meant to be “Floydalia,” but a mistake in transmission led to its current form.
Others believe it’s a blend of Floyd County and Ada, the name of James Price’s mother. A third theory links it to Caroline Price’s parents, Floyd and Ada.
With the arrival of the railroad and the establishment of a post office, Floydada began to thrive. It became an agricultural center for West Texas, known for its cotton farming, grain, and livestock. By 1900, the population had already begun to rise, and Floydada quickly grew into a central part of the community.
Today, it is home to about 3,000 residents who carry on the legacy of those early pioneers. The town’s pride in its agricultural roots remains strong, and one of the highlights of the year is the Punkin Days Festival—a celebration of the harvest season complete with food, music, and plenty of pumpkins. It’s a time when Floydada’s community spirit shines, bringing together locals and visitors alike.
Just outside of town, nature lovers can enjoy the beauty of Caprock Canyons State Park, known for its breathtaking views, wildlife, and hiking trails. It’s a perfect destination for anyone looking to experience the stunning natural beauty of West Texas.
Floydada is also the hometown of Don Williams, the country music legend known for his smooth voice and timeless hits. Don’s musical legacy is an important part of the town’s story.
Whether you’re here for the festivals, the history, the country music, or just to enjoy the peaceful Texas plains, Floydada offers something for everyone.
