Lakeway is a small city in Travis County on the south shore of Lake Travis, about 20–25 minutes west of Austin. Once a quiet Hill Country getaway, it’s now a relaxed, family-friendly base for boating, hiking, golf, and lake-view dining. If you’re planning a weekend by the water—or scouting a day trip from Austin—use this guide for a quick history, can’t-miss spots, and practical tips.
Quick Facts & Location
Lakeway sits along RM 620 between Bee Cave and Hudson Bend, with easy access to the lake, marinas, and parks. Summers are hot and busy on the water; spring and fall bring mild weather for trails and patios. Winter is quieter, but sunny days are common.
A Short History of Lakeway
Lakeway grew out of ranchland and a bold resort idea. In 1962, Houston oilman and rancher Jack Josey agreed to sell a portion of his 2,700-acre ranch to a group of Gulfmont Hotel Company partners—John H. Crooker, G. Flint Sawtelle, and Lee Blocker—who secured a short option to plan a destination hotel and golf community on newly formed Lake Travis. The name “Lakeway” nodded to Gulfmont’s “Fairway” brand and to the community’s golf-and-lake vision.
Construction began in 1962, and the resort hotel held its grand opening on July 12, 1963. The Lakeway Land Company formed soon after, with Flint Sawtelle leading real-estate development that attracted second-home owners and full-time residents alike.
In 1974, with Austin’s consent, local property owners voted to incorporate roughly 1,200 acres as the Village of Lakeway. Decades of steady growth followed—more neighborhoods, marinas, schools, and parks—shaping today’s city centered on lake life, trails, and community events.

- Weekends are busy. FM 620 can back up; plan extra time between Bee Cave, Lakeway, and the marinas.
