Since Dallas, Texas, is the most populated city in the state, it’s home to some of the most important healthcare institutions. These healthcare facilities provide excellent care and have many beds for both acute-care and routine-care patients. Many of these hospitals also have teaching facilities and several of the best medical schools in the country.
Choosing the biggest hospital in a region is often a good bet for ensuring that the patient receives the best healthcare since these institutions attract the most highly skilled personnel. However, in a city the size of Dallas, given the long distances one must travel to reach their destination in Texas, this can be a little difficult. That being said, these are the major hospitals in Dallas.
Baylor University Medical Center
Baylor University Medical Center is the biggest hospital in Dallas, Texas, and is part of Baylor Scott & White Healthcare. It has approximately 1,020 licensed beds, with 940 dedicated to and equipped for acute care. The hospital is located at 3500 Gaston Avenue and has over 4,700 highly experienced and trained employees.
Baylor University Medical Center provides advanced medical training and a variety of medical services for in-patient and out-patient patients. Texas A&M University is affiliated with the hospital.
Although the name implies a connection to Baylor University, the hospital is no longer associated with this renowned academic institution. Baylor University Medical Center also handles medical emergencies, from trauma to car accidents.
Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital
This is another one of Dallas’ largest hospitals. This healthcare facility has over 1,000 licensed beds, with 875 suited for acute health care.
The Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital, located at 8200 Walnut Hill Lane, provides many out-patient and in-patient healthcare services. These services include specialized care for spinal cord injuries and cardiovascular issues.
Due to its alliance with the University of Texas, Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital also provides medical training. The affiliation has allowed this hospital to play a part in advancing medical education not only in Dallas and Texas but also across the country.
Medical City Dallas
Medical City Dallas was founded in 1974 by Robert J. (Bob) Wright and the Southwest Clinic physicians, where Bob Wright was the clinic manager. The Medical City Foundation, as a 501(c)3 organization, supports the vital work of other nonprofit organizations in creating healthier futures for the North Texas community.
Medical City Dallas is an 899-bed, award-winning hospital known for its cutting-edge medical facilities and dedication to patient care excellence. The medical team is based in Dallas, Texas, and includes over 1,700 physicians, mostly world-renowned experts in the field. Medical City Dallas has hospitals that focus on women, children, adults, and the spine and heart.
The hospital complex housed Dallas’ first Health Maintenance Organization (HMO), a fixed-fee medical program established by a joint venture between Prudential Insurance Company of America and Kaiser Permanente Medical Care Program. When the HMO program first began in 1979, the initial facility cost $1 million.
UT Southwestern Medical Center
The UT (University of Texas) Southwestern Medical Center is a Dallas-based public academic health science center. UT Southwestern is the biggest medical school in the UT System and the state of Texas, with approximately 13,568 employees, 2,445 faculty, and more than 2.7 million out-patient visits per year. According to Forbes, UT Southwestern Medical Center is the best healthcare employer in Texas and the best healthcare employer for new graduates in the US.
The mission of UT Southwestern is threefold: conduct research, educate leaders in biomedical science, patient care, and disease prevention; and provide patient care. It comprises three major degree-granting institutions: the UT Southwestern Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, the UT Southwestern Medical School, and the UT Southwestern School of Health Professions.
However, UT Southwestern faculty members also work at the VA North Texas Health Care System, Scottish Rite for Children, and other affiliated community clinics and hospitals in the North Texas region. Faculty and residents care for over 360,00 emergency room cases, more than 117,000 hospitalized patients, and oversee almost 3 million out-patient visits per year, including over $106.7 million in unreimbursed clinical services.
Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Plano
Baylor Scott & White Health decided to expand to Collin County with the establishment of Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Plano, backed by 100 years of experience. The hospital, also known as Baylor Plano, opened in 2004.
Baylor Scott & White – Plano has added many new services and building spaces to help accommodate the specific health requirements of adults in North Texas, including a dedicated oncology unit, the Brain and Spine Center, and a dedicated orthopedic unit.
Baylor Scott & White – Plano is a seven-story facility with 160 beds. The Heart Hospital moved to Baylor Scott & White – Plano in January 2007. Baylor Plano (now called the Baylor Scott & White The Heart Hospital – Plano) is the region’s first and only freestanding, full-service hospital devoted entirely to heart and vascular care.
In June 2007, the hospital added a dedicated oncology unit and an infusion and dialysis unit. The Baylor Scoliosis Center, located at Baylor Scott & White – Plano, treats severe spinal deformity and scoliosis.
Parkland Memorial Hospital
Parkland Memorial Hospital is an example of one of Dallas’ largest hospitals. It has over 1,000 licensed beds, including 870 for acute health care cases.
Parkland Memorial Hospital has been in operation since 1894 and is situated at 5200 Harry Hines Boulevard. This hospital employs over 4,000 people and provides medical training and specialized treatment for a wide range of medical diseases and conditions.
Children’s Medical Center Dallas
Children’s Medical Center Dallas is a nationally recognized pediatric acute care teaching hospital in the city. The hospital is associated with the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School and has 496 pediatric beds.
The hospital offers comprehensive pediatric specialties and subspecialties to children, infants, teenagers, and young adults aged 0–21 in Texas and surrounding areas. It occasionally treats adults who need pediatric care.
Children’s Medical Center Dallas is one of five ACS-designated level 1 pediatric trauma centers in Texas. The hospital is also affiliated with the nearby Parkland Memorial Hospital.
