Texas has become one of the leading states for solar energy development in the United States. Although traditionally known for oil, natural gas, and wind power, the state has experienced rapid growth in solar electricity generation over the past decade. Large solar farms, residential rooftop installations, and investments in energy infrastructure have helped establish Texas as a major center for renewable electricity production.

Texas Has More Than 50,000 Megawatts of Installed Solar Capacity

Texas has experienced remarkable growth in solar energy installations. By the end of 2025, the state had approximately 51,900 megawatts of installed solar capacity, according to the Solar Energy Industries Association.

This placed Texas second in the nation for total installed solar capacity, behind California. The figure represents a substantial increase from earlier years, when solar power accounted for a relatively small portion of Texas's electricity supply.

The expansion has been driven by large utility-scale solar farms, commercial installations, and residential solar systems throughout the state.

Solar Generation in Texas Has Expanded Rapidly Over the Past Decade

Solar electricity generation has increased dramatically in Texas as improvements in technology and declining installation costs have made solar projects more economically attractive.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, solar's share of electricity generation on the ERCOT grid increased from approximately 4% in 2021 to 12% in 2025.

This rapid expansion reflects the construction of new solar farms and the growing use of solar energy to meet electricity demand across the state.

As Texas's population and industrial activity continue to expand, solar generation has become an increasingly important part of its electricity supply.

Texas Is Among the Leading States for New Solar Capacity Additions

Texas has consistently ranked among the country's leading states for newly installed solar power capacity.

In 2024, the state added approximately 10,854 megawatts of solar capacity, demonstrating the scale of its renewable energy development.

Large projects have been constructed throughout West Texas, Central Texas, and other regions where available land and favorable sunlight conditions support solar electricity generation.

Continued investment in solar infrastructure has helped Texas remain one of the nation's fastest-growing solar energy markets.

The Texas Solar Industry Supports More Than 12,000 Jobs

Solar energy development has created employment opportunities across Texas, supporting workers in construction, engineering, manufacturing, installation, maintenance, and project management.

According to the Interstate Renewable Energy Council, Texas supported approximately 12,820 solar industry jobs in 2024, ranking third nationally for solar employment.

These jobs include electricians, solar panel installers, engineers, technicians, sales representatives, and other professionals involved in renewable energy development.

The expansion of solar installations has also created opportunities for local contractors, transportation providers, and equipment suppliers.

West Texas Has Become an Important Solar Energy Region

West Texas is one of the state's major centers for utility-scale solar development because of its abundant sunshine and large areas of available land.

Solar farms in the region use extensive arrays of photovoltaic panels to convert sunlight into electricity. Many projects are located in rural areas where large installations can be developed without the space limitations found in major cities.

West Texas also benefits from existing energy infrastructure, including transmission lines developed to support wind power and other electricity sources.

These advantages have encouraged continued investment in large solar energy projects.

Texas Solar Farms Can Cover Thousands of Acres

Utility-scale solar farms often require extensive land areas to accommodate thousands or even millions of photovoltaic panels.

Some of the largest solar developments in Texas cover several thousand acres and generate enough electricity to serve substantial numbers of homes and businesses.

These facilities generally connect directly to the electrical grid, allowing the electricity they produce to be distributed across the state.

The size of modern solar farms demonstrates how solar energy has developed from a relatively small electricity source into a major component of Texas's power infrastructure.

Residential Rooftop Solar Is Growing in Texas

Solar energy development in Texas is not limited to large commercial facilities. Residential rooftop solar installations have also become increasingly common.

Homeowners install solar panels to generate electricity for their households, potentially reducing the amount of electricity they purchase from utility providers.

According to federal energy data, electricity generation from small-scale solar systems in Texas increased from approximately 391 gigawatt-hours in 2016 to 5,408 gigawatt-hours in 2025.

This growth reflects increasing residential interest in solar technology and the wider availability of installation services.

Texas Solar Power Helps Meet High Summer Electricity Demand

Texas experiences extremely hot summers, creating substantial electricity demand as homes and businesses operate air conditioning systems.

Solar power can help meet this demand because electricity production is often strong during sunny daytime hours when cooling needs are high.

Large solar farms can provide significant amounts of electricity during periods of intense sunshine, reducing the need for some conventional power generation.

However, solar output decreases during cloudy conditions and stops after sunset, making other energy resources and storage systems important for maintaining reliable electricity supplies.

Battery Storage Is Becoming More Important to Texas Solar Energy

As solar electricity generation increases, battery energy storage systems are becoming an important part of Texas's electricity infrastructure.

These systems can store electricity during periods of high production and release it when demand increases or solar generation declines.

Battery storage can be especially useful during evening hours, when electricity demand may remain high after solar panels stop generating power.

Several Texas solar projects are being developed alongside battery storage facilities, allowing operators to manage electricity production and distribution more effectively.

Solar Power Produces Electricity Without Burning Fossil Fuels

Solar panels generate electricity by converting sunlight directly into electrical energy through photovoltaic technology.

Unlike natural gas and coal-fired power plants, solar panels do not burn fuel during normal electricity production. As a result, they generate electricity without directly releasing carbon dioxide or other combustion-related air pollutants.

However, manufacturing solar panels, constructing facilities, and eventually recycling or disposing of equipment still involve environmental impacts.

Even with these considerations, solar energy generally has substantially lower life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions than fossil fuel electricity generation.

Texas Has Attracted Billions of Dollars in Solar Investments

The expansion of solar energy has attracted substantial investment in construction, equipment manufacturing, transmission infrastructure, and related services.

By June 2025, the Solar Energy Industries Association estimated that the cumulative value of Texas's solar market had reached approximately $52.9 billion.

These investments have supported major construction projects and created business opportunities in communities throughout the state.

Solar development can also generate property tax revenue and provide lease payments to rural landowners who allow energy companies to install panels on their properties.

Solar and Wind Energy Are Changing Texas's Electricity Mix

Texas is already the leading wind electricity-producing state in the United States, and the rapid expansion of solar power has further diversified its energy resources.

Wind and solar generation can complement each other because their production patterns often differ. Solar generation is concentrated during daylight hours, while wind turbines may continue generating electricity overnight.

Together, these resources provide a substantial share of Texas's electricity, alongside natural gas, nuclear energy, coal, and other sources.

The expansion of renewable electricity has also increased the importance of transmission infrastructure, energy storage, and advanced grid management.

Texas Solar Power Is Expected to Continue Expanding

Texas remains one of the most important states for future solar energy development.

In May 2026, the U.S. Energy Information Administration projected that utility-scale solar generation on the ERCOT grid could reach approximately 78 billion kilowatt-hours during 2026, potentially exceeding coal-fired electricity generation for the first time on an annual basis.

This projection reflects the continuing construction of solar facilities and the growing demand for electricity across Texas.

Future development will depend on transmission availability, project costs, electricity demand, and changes in energy policies.

The Lasting Impact of Texas Solar Power Growth

Texas's rapid expansion in solar energy represents an important development in the state's energy history. Long associated with oil, natural gas, and wind power, Texas has also become one of the nation's leading solar electricity producers.

With more than 50,000 megawatts of installed solar capacity by the end of 2025 and thousands of jobs supported by the industry, solar power has become an important contributor to the state's economy and electricity supply.

As technology improves and electricity demand continues to grow, solar energy is positioned to remain a significant part of Texas's changing energy industry.
