Early Life and Education
Burnie Burns, born Michael Justin Burns on January 18, 1973, in Rochester, New York, didn’t have a conventional upbringing.
Growing up in Houston, Texas, as the son of a Catholic family, you might expect a traditional route. At first, he aimed for a medical career, even participating in clinical rotations as a member of HOSA during high school.
However, his interests evolved. At The University of Texas at Austin, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Computer Science. While there, he co-founded Sneak Peek, a student television program that became the longest-running college entertainment show in the U.S.
His early training in digital media and production at Alief Elsik High School laid a solid foundation for his career in entertainment.
The Birth of a Filmmaker
Although Burnie initially leaned toward medicine, those who knew him wouldn’t be surprised by his eventual shift to creative pursuits.
Raised in Houston, his interest in film began early. At the University of Texas, he transitioned from pre-med to computer science while launching Sneak Peek, marking the start of his creative career.
His first film, The Schedule, was produced with roommates Joel Heyman and Matt Hullum, though it faced challenges in distribution. Burnie’s instinct for viral content and use of video game footage helped lay the groundwork for the breakout series Red vs. Blue.
That success would lead to the creation of Rooster Teeth, forever changing internet entertainment.
Founding Rooster Teeth
In 2003, Burnie Burns, alongside Geoff Ramsey, Gus Sorola, Matt Hullum, and Joel Heyman, co-founded Rooster Teeth Productions, sparked by the viral success of Red vs. Blue.
The idea grew from their time running drunkgamers.com, where debates about video game storytelling led to the series concept.
The first episode of Red vs. Blue premiered on April 1, 2003, and quickly gained attention, prompting a move to a dedicated website, redvsblue.com, for better reach.
Under Burnie’s leadership, Rooster Teeth became a multimedia pioneer, leveraging digital platforms and community engagement to grow a fiercely loyal fanbase and industry recognition.
The Rise of Red vs. Blue

As Rooster Teeth took shape, Red vs. Blue became the cornerstone of its brand.
Created by Burnie Burns, this innovative machinima series used Halo gameplay footage and voiceover performances to create a story-driven comedy. Though originally planned as a short project, it evolved into the Blood Gulch Chronicles, spanning over 100 episodes.
Red vs. Blue won multiple awards at the 2003 Machinima Film Festival and is regarded as one of the longest-running web series in internet history.
Its success helped Rooster Teeth transition from a passion project to a leader in online storytelling, expanding rapidly across new genres and platforms.
Expanding the Rooster Teeth Universe
Fueled by Red vs. Blue’s popularity, Rooster Teeth, with Burnie Burns as a guiding force, expanded into multiple forms of media.
The studio introduced hit animated series like RWBY, Camp Camp, and gaming brand Achievement Hunter—each helping diversify its content library.
Rooster Teeth also entered the live-action space with Lazer Team, which broke Indiegogo crowdfunding records at the time.
Community outreach through RTX, Rooster Teeth’s fan convention, and a strong YouTube presence helped foster a vibrant digital community.
Although Rooster Teeth faced corporate restructuring in later years, its legacy under Burnie’s influence remains influential in the digital content world.
Innovations in Digital Storytelling

Rather than following traditional paths, Burnie Burns pioneered a new kind of storytelling by using games like Halo for machinima narratives.
With Red vs. Blue, Burns merged gameplay visuals with smart dialogue and narrative depth, creating an entirely new genre of fan-driven media. He further expanded these ideas with The Strangerhood, using The Sims 2, and with P.A.N.I.C.S., set in the F.E.A.R. game engine.
Later, Immersion blended real-world experiments with video game concepts, offering humorous and inventive science-meets-gaming experiences.
Burns’ projects helped define community-integrated content, changing how audiences interact with and even contribute to digital narratives.
Acquisition and Revival Plans
Following Rooster Teeth’s decline, Burnie Burns made headlines by reacquiring the company through his new production firm, Box Canyon Productions, in 2023.
The move marks his return to Rooster Teeth after several years away. His vision centers on restoring the brand’s original spirit of creativity and fan-first programming.
With Rooster Teeth officially shut down in 2024 by then-owner Warner Bros. Discovery, Burns stepped in to revive key IPs and reconnect with the fanbase. He announced a reboot of his first feature film, The Schedule, set for summer 2025.
Burnie also launched a new podcast, Morning Somewhere, in 2024—an early indicator of his plans to re-establish Rooster Teeth as an independent creative force.
Burnie’s Legacy and Future Endeavors
Burnie Burns has left a permanent mark on digital content creation, co-founding Rooster Teeth and producing Red vs. Blue, which redefined what online video could be.
Now, following the 2024 shutdown of Rooster Teeth, he’s back in control through Box Canyon Productions, leading efforts that include:
- Reimagining early works like The Schedule
- Launching original audio series like Again
- Relaunching Rooster Teeth’s social channels and website
