The city’s intention to have an expansion team resulted in the dispersal of the San Antonio Scorpions franchise of the North American Soccer League. The first head coach of the San Antonio FC was Elon University’s men’s soccer former coach and Orlando City SC Pro Academy Director, Darren Powell. The team’s first player was Carlos Alvarez, and he joined the team on February 2, 2016.

During the San Antonio FC’s inaugural season, they failed to make it to the playoffs. The team finished the 2017 USL regular season with a 17–11–4 record. San Antonio FC managed to advance to the Western Conference semifinals before they got eliminated. In October 2019, the San Antonio FC decided to part ways with their head coach Darren Powell after being with the team for four seasons. Under Powell’s supervision, the team accumulated an overall competition win-draw-loss record of 59-39-44. He also led the club to its first and only playoff appearance in 2017; however, the team failed to make the playoffs under his leadership in the other three seasons. On the other hand, his assistant coach, Alen Marcina, replaced Powell on December 9, 2019, in time for the team’s preparation for the 2020 USL Championship season. Marcina is known to lead the former San Antonio Scorpions to their only NASL championship in the 2014 season.
