Eckert is a small ghost town located in northeastern Gillespie County, Texas, roughly 11.5 miles northeast of Fredericksburg along U.S. Highway 16. The area was first settled in 1875 by a group of eight Anglo-American families who built a log church called Mount Zion, which became the center of community and worship for early settlers. At that time, the settlement was known as Nebo, most likely named after the nearby Mount Nebo hill.

Founding and Early Development

As the community grew, its residents established farms and ranches in the rolling Hill Country terrain. The log church not only served religious purposes but also hosted local gatherings, making it a focal point of the early settlement. For several decades, Nebo remained a small but stable rural community, defined by its agricultural roots and church life.

In 1903, local resident Wilhelm Rudolph Eckert (1873–1954) opened a general store to serve area farmers and ranchers. That same year, he applied for a post office, and when the postal service required a unique name, the community was renamed Eckert in his honor. Eckert became the town's first postmaster, and his store functioned as both a business and a social hub.

Growth and Population Peak

The early 20th century brought modest growth to Eckert. According to the Texas State Historical Association, the population reached an estimated 100 residents by 1925. The town had several key establishments during its most active years, including the general store, post office, church, and local school. Its economy revolved around agriculture and trade with neighboring rural communities.

Decline and Ghost Town Status

After 1925, Eckert began to experience a steady decline. The population dropped to 15 by 1933 and further to 7 by 1964, as younger generations moved to nearby towns for employment and better access to services. The post office eventually closed, and many buildings fell into disuse. By the late 20th century, Eckert was considered a ghost town, though a few ranches and residences remain in the surrounding area.

Present-Day Eckert

Today, Eckert is recognized as a historic rural site rather than an active community. Its landscape consists of open ranchland, quiet roads, and a few surviving landmarks that mark its early history. Among these is the Eckert Cemetery, located north of the intersection of U.S. 16 and FM 1323. The cemetery remains well-maintained and serves as a tangible link to the town's early settlers.

Eckert no longer has a post office of its own and shares the ZIP code 78675 with the nearby community of Willow City. The site continues to attract visitors interested in Hill Country history and rural heritage.
